The latest announcements from the Principal, PTSO, and NPS...
Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. Chapter 71, Section 57 and 105 CMR 200.000) require that public schools collect height and weight measurements of students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10. These measurements are used to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a screening tool to monitor students’ growth and development and identify possible health risks.
Your child’s screening will be supervised by the school nurse and each student’s privacy will be respected at all times. Your child’s height, weight, and BMI measurements will be recorded in your child’s school health record and kept strictly confidential. The screening results will be available to parents/guardians upon request. If you choose not to have your child participate in the Growth Screening Program, please contact the school nurse. I am very excited to announce the launch of a new PTSO initiative: Success@South, our targeted fundraising campaign. Our inaugural initiative will be the Library Renovation Project. With your help, we will build a 100 foot-long technology counter in the library, reclaiming unused shelving near the beautiful windows overlooking the courtyard. With this remodel, students will have a new space to engage in thoughtful research and collaboration with modern tools. Our goal is to transform the outdated, over-crowded library into a flexible learning space to better facilitate inquiry, synergy and the communication of ideas – but we need your help.
Did you know that the daily traffic in the Newton South library exceeds the entire population of the school? Reconfiguring and updating the space will impact the daily learning environment for the entire student body. Contributions made before December 31 will help us to complete this project during April vacation. In other words, the money we raise now will be used to benefit all students this year. All money donated to Success@South is fully tax-deductible. Please click here to donate.
A Success@South brochure should arrive in your mailbox over the next day or two. If you have any questions, please click here to see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), or email Betsy Blagdon, Lori Lass and Emily Prenner at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Save the date: We will also be having a Community Dinner on Saturday, February 1, to raise funds and – more importantly – to come together as a community for night of food and fun. More details on the Community Dinner will come after December break. Meanwhile, if you are in a position to make an end-of-year charitable contribution, please include Newton South on your list and donate to Success@South.

This week, students in participating advisories volunteered to buy holiday gifts for children whose families lack the financial means to provide presents. UNWRAPPED gifts are due Monday, December 9 during advisory. If your child has volunteered to buy a gift, please make sure they know to bring it this Monday. Gifts will be wrapped at school. We would like to thank all the volunteers who helped make the Fall Sports season a success. A particular shout out goes to Margaret Leipsitz and Matthew Yarmolinsky for stocking and staffing the concession stand at the home football games this season. Also, thanks to Abby Stacks and Elyssa Freedman for coordinating Spiritwear inventory, staffing and sales during the first months of school. There will be similar needs in the Winter and Spring seasons so please consider giving some time when we ask for help in future newsletters.
Don’t miss a “first” in Newton Boy’s Basketball as the varsity teams from South and North will play each other on the legendary parquet floor at TD Garden on Saturday, January 25, at 6:45PM. Tickets are available for $12 in the South Athletics office.
The athletic schedules for South’s winter season have been posted on the Google calendar on the PTSO website. (Alpine Skiing’s schedule will be posted later.) Location information has been added for some events – just click on event titles to see locations. There are separate calendars for each sport, so you can use the filter to view the ones you’re interested in. You can also import these calendars to your personal electronic calendar (on Outlook, iPhone, etc.). See the website for instructions.
The PTSO seeks a volunteer for each sport to keep that sport’s calendar up-to-date as things change during the season. It’s easy to do. If you’d like to offer this service, email email@example.com.
